Another Look By Ralph Harpuder
For Shanghailanders who do not have the opportunity to attend the exhibit, “Home and Exile,” which began in September 2006 at the Berlin Jewish Museum*, a complete set of photographs of the room reserved for the display of Hongkew Ghetto memorabilia is herewith shown for viewing. Although a small section of the room was already presented in a previous report, thanks to Petra Hertwig, the registrar of collections who sent yours truly the CD-R, we can now see the room housing this special Shanghai exhibit in its entirety. The room was designed by the architect and set designer, Hans-Dieter Schaal. Most of the Shanghai memorabilia inside the show-windows were salvaged by stateless refugees in the late 30’s before their departure from Germany and Austria. Several other important items on display were artifacts and souvenirs acquired by Jewish refugees while they were living in Shanghai during and after the war. The Shanghai exhibit was only part of the major exhibition, “Jewish Emigration from Germany since 1933,” dedicated to the most important countries of immigration: The US, Palestine, Great Britain, and South America in which approximately three quarters of all immigrants were located by 1955. Shanghai was the port of last resort.
*The exhibit at the Berlin Jewish Museum runs through April 9, 2007. It continues at the House der Geschichte, Bonn from May 17, 2007 through October 7, 2007. The final showing of Home and Exile will be held at the Forum of Contemporary History, Leipzig from December 2007 through February 2008.
